The SVU Foundation sponsors a $5,000 grant given to a member to support research focused on vascular diagnostic testing. The grant recipient must meet the following requirements:
- Be a member of the Society for Vascular Ultrasound.
- Be either a student studying vascular ultrasonography, vascular surgery (medical student, resident or fellow), or in a career pertaining to vascular ultrasound for less than 10 years.
- Agree to present findings of the research at the Society for Vascular Ultrasound Annual Conference for which the presenter will receive a complementary registration.
- Agree to submit findings of the research for consideration for publication in the Journal for Vascular Ultrasound
Grant funds are a one-time grant to be used for materials, supplies or salaries, or towards travel to present at the SVU Annual Conference.
Funds may not be used for institutional indirect costs.
To be considered for the Vascular Laboratory Research Grant, a candidate must submit the following:
- Research proposal adhering to the guidelines listed below.
- One (1) letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor, supervisor, division chief or department chair.
- Curriculum vitae of the primary investigator.
- Supporting documents including Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval letter.
RESEARCH PROPOSAL
The research proposal should be no longer than 5 pages in total. The proposal should be typed, double-spaced using 12-point font with one inch margins.
Project Abstract:
The purpose of the Project Abstract is to briefly describe the major aspect of the project. It should include the importance of the proposed research to patients or the vascular community. It should be limited to one page and include:
- The specific aims, objectives or hypothesis
- The methodology to be used
- Results/data to be analyzed
- A description of how the results will be beneficial.
Background and Rationale:
This section should describe the background of the topic of the proposal. It should include references to prior publications as appropriate. It should describe why the project is needed and what new information is expected to be obtained. It is this section where the importance of the proposal should be clearly described. Generally, this section should be 1-3 pages in length.
Study Objectives/Specific Aims:
This section should clearly state the purpose of the study. What data will be specifically examined. It can be in the form of a bulleted list of objectives or a hypothesis statement.
Methods:
This section includes the methods and analyses of the project. The expected timetable of the project should also be stated. This section must be comprehensive and include:
- Who are the study subjects (for example: patients, volunteers, animals, etc.)
- What are the specific inclusion and exclusion criteria for a subject
- What are the specific methods
- What is the specific data to be obtained
- How is the data to be analyzed
For studies involving human subjects, Institutional Review Board (IRB) review and approval will be required prior to presentation or publication.
Budget and Justification:
This section should justify all the expenses related to the project. Potential expense items include salaries, supplies, equipment, etc. Identify individuals and their time commitment if funding is to be used to support salaries. Institutional indirect costs are not to be paid by the research grant.
Summary:
This section should include what is expected to be determined from the data. The importance and applicability of the findings should be briefly described.
