The Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU) is the community of Vascular Lab Professionals leading the way for high quality care of vascular patients. The Society convened for the 2022 Annual Conference & Marketplace at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, FL from August 4-6, 2022. This was the first in-person meeting since the before the pandemic, and it featured enlightening educational content, extensive hands-on education opportunities and a sold out exhibit Marketplace. During the meeting the SVU instated two new Fellows and presented several awards to those in the vascular ultrasound profession.
2022 SVU Fellows Induction
The SVU Fellow designation honors outstanding leaders in the industry. Fellows are recognized by SVU for their many outstanding contributions to the Society, as well as to the vascular ultrasound profession. This year we presented this honor to, two individuals:
Laurie Lozanski, BS, RVT, RVS
Ms. Lozanski is Technical Director of the Vascular Laboratory at the University of Chicago. She is an adjunct faculty member at Rush University in Chicago, is on their Advisory Board, and has taught vascular ultrasound students for 20 years. Ms. Lozanski has co-authored several textbooks on vascular ultrasound and been published in journals. She is very active at national conferences, having been a session moderator and presenter of many talks, and posters. She is a member of and has had leadership positions for the Chicago Area Vascular Association. Ms. Lozanski is currently the Chair of the SVU eLearning Committee, is a past Chair of the Membership Committee, and has also served on the Annual Conference Committee.
Jill Sommerset, RVT
Ms. Sommerset is the Technical Director at Advanced Vascular Centers in Portland, Oregon. She has a deep interest and passion for Chronic Limb Threatening Ischemia and pelvic venous disorders. Ms. Sommerset is the developer of Pedal Duplex and Pedal Acceleration Time and has published many peer reviewed papers. Ms. Sommerset is a global educator and collaborates with vascular specialists on research studies with the hope to make a worldwide impact to help decrease unnecessary amputations. She is currently serving on the Board of Directors for SVU and currently serves as chair of the SVU Annual Conference Committee.
2022 Melissa Vickery Scholarship Winner
Established in 2021, this grant was created to honor an individual who has made a significant and unique contribution to advance the profession and field of Vascular Ultrasound. This award will be funded through a $1,000 annual gift from PenVasc. The award is intended to cover the costs of attending the SVU Annual Conference. Awarded to: Paula Walsh, RDCS, RVT, RDMS
2022 Professional Achievement Award
Heather Gornik, MD, RVT, RPVI was recognized with the Professional Achievement Award.This scientific award is presented to a past or current SVU member who has made substantial contributions to the vascular technology profession through education (traditional or non-traditional), scientific research (contributor, implementation or new modality), or other achievements. Dr. Gornik is co-director of the Vascular Center at University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. A cardiologist and vascular medicine specialist. Dr. Gornik is an internationally recognized expert in the care of complex vascular diseases, particularly fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), an uncommon disease of the arteries that can lead to narrowing, aneurysm and dissection. Dr. Gornik has led the development of national guidelines related to the diagnosis and clinical care pathways for patients with vascular disease
2022 D. E. Strandness, M.D. Award
Sophia Cuscieri received this award for her paper, “Critical Limb Ischemia: The Impact of Frailty and Post-Intervention Perfusion on Outcomes.”
2022 Excellence in Oral Clinical Presentation Award
Traci Fox, EdD, RT(R), RDMS, RVT received this award for her paper, “Nonanastomotic Pseudoaneurysm of Axillobifemoral Bypass Graft.”
2022 Award for Excellence in a Case Study Poster Presentation
Lauren Satterlee, MSHS, RVT, BSHS received this award for her poster, “Trauma Induced Arteriovenous Fistula and Malformation.”
2022 Physician Presenter Award
Zsolt Garami, MD, RPVI, received this award for his paper, “Predicting Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Success with a New Outcome Measure.”
